A very brief history. Up until the 1500′s, the Maya Indians had Cancun and the Yucatan peninsula all to themselves. In the winters the Mayan  kings came to the city of Tulum,  just south of present day Cancun in the Mexican Riviera. It must have been heaven on Earth until the Spanish conquistadors arrived and decimated the population. The Yucatan peninsula remained a sleepy rural area until the 1960′s when Mexican developers came looking for new property to capture the tourist market to the north. It was with the aid of satellite technology that Cancun was discovered. It was an idyllic setting, nothing there but a coconut tree plantation, pinkish sand,  calm turquoise blue seas, a few lazy iguanas and three caretakers. It was just a few hundred miles across the Gulf of Mexico from where  millions of rich Americanos lived. They all wanted to get away from their cold snowy winters. It was a perfect match.

Since those early days Cancun has become Mexicos’ largest tourist destination with over 150 world class hotels represented by names such as Hyatt, Ritz-Carlton, Club Med, Intercontinental, Marriott, Fiesta Americana, Wyndham, Westin, Omni and many others. The budgets and levels of luxury are as varied as the colors of the sea. There is something in Cancun for everyone. From simple one star hotels (not recommended) to the most lavish oceanfront private villas to be found anywhere in the world. Just to the south of Cancun is Playa del Carmen, a new area discovered in the 1980′s which was developed and properly labeled the “Mexican Riviera”.  Not quite as concentrated as Cancun, here you will find the hotels to be more secluded with a lot more acreage. Not really having a city center it is considered more laid back than it’s big brother Cancun. The Mexican Riviera has experienced tremendous growth but has yet retained it’s small town Mexican atmosphere. Miles of beaches await you in Cancun and the Mexican Riviera.
