There are two distinct beach areas to Cancun. The island is shaped like an “L” with the short bottom part enjoying virtually calm seas regardless of weather conditions. This is caused by the island of Isla de Mujeres (Island of Women) protecting this side of Cancun. This author did not see an overwhelming amount of women there nor understands the origin of the name. The longer part of the island hosts more hotels than it’s counterpart because of it simply being longer. It is also true that most of the mega resorts are located there again because it was developed later and there was more beachfront available. Cancun has a town and while it is worth a visit, it is not a recommended place fo an overnight stay because it lacks the beach.
